The Wakunaga Group
Kyolic is a part of the Wakunaga Group of Companies, which was founded in Japan in 1955 by Mr. Manji Wakunaga and Dr. Eugene Schnell. In 1972, founders Mr. Wakunaga and Dr. Schnell established Wakunaga of America, headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the distribution of Aged Garlic Extract was extended to America under the brand name “Kyolic®”.
Kyolic’s Historical Relevance
Wakunaga’s story begins in post-war Japan, where banker Manji Wakunaga recognized a troubling truth: many pharmaceutical companies were prioritizing profit over people at a time when the nation’s most vulnerable needed genuine support. Determined to offer something better, he crossed paths with Dr. Eugene Schnell—a German physician recruited by the American military to help rebuild Japan’s medical system. Drawing on Germany’s strong tradition of natural medicine, Dr. Schnell proposed an unconventional but compelling solution: garlic as a tool for restoring public health.
Inspired, the two joined forces and took garlic far beyond its culinary roots. Dr. Schnell developed a pioneering aging process that eliminated garlic’s pungent odor while enhancing its most beneficial compounds, resulting in a safe, effective extract unlike anything available at the time. This innovation set the foundation for Wakunaga and ultimately led to the creation of Kyolic—a name blending “Kyo,” meaning strength or power, with garlic itself: Powerful Garlic.
